Decide why you want study in the U.S.

Before you begin to select a college or university, think about your goals in planning to study in the United States. What do you want to study? Write down a list of you goals before you begin your research on U.S. colleges and universities.

Choose a field of study

Your major is the field of study in which you plan to specialize. It is not essential to declare the major you plan to undertake when you enter a university. If you have a definite degree objective, you need to identify universities offering that field..

Make a short list

Choosing universities from thousands of miles away presents some challenges - especially when there are so many great colleges to choose from in the United States. But if you plan ahead and do your research carefully, you will come up with a manageable shortlist of colleges that match you needs. Every students is different, and when making your choices you should consider carefully the factors that are important to you in both you education and your lifestyle:

* level of study (bachelor's, graduate, associate, vocational, etc.)
* accreditation
* cost

* competitive level

* application deadline

* location

* housing

* climate

* international students on campus

* social life

* extracurricular activities

Prepare to apply

Application requirements vary from college to college. You need to provide everything requested before your application file is considered "complete". Read the application carefully and ask questions if you are not sure what is being asked.

Most U.S. universities request the following documents together with a filled application form, make sure to have everything than is needed:

* Standard Test scores (TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, SAT I, SAT II)

* Official Transcripts and Records

* Proof of Financial Support

* Letters of Recommendation

Request application materials

Some U.S. universities have a separate application form for international students. Usually this is located online through the university Website. If you have difficulty locating the application materials online, send an e-mail or write to the International Admissions Office and request that materials be mailed to you.

Submit applications

Check application deadlines, contact faculty and obtain details on the program. Choose 3-8 institutions and send applications. Enclose the required nonrefundable application fee and all required documents.

Receive responses and accept or decline

When letters of acceptance or rejection arrive, decide which university to attend, notify the admissions office of your decision, complete and return any forms they require.

Send letters of regret to those universities you turn down.

Apply for a visa

Apply to U.S. embassy or consulate for a visa upon receipt of your I-20 form and well in advance of your departure date.

To apply for an F-1 students visa, you must have a valid I-20 form; for the J-1 visa, you must have the IAP-66 form; and for M-1 visa, an I-20M-N form.
